Off-road Driving and Recovery Course


Course length

This is a practical four day training course covering off-road all-terrain driving and vehicle recovery.

Course aim

To enable those who need to drive in high-risk situations to learn to do so with confidence in all conditions and types of terrain, and to be prepared for all vehicle-related situations.

Note that this course can be combined with the MASC defensive driving course to provide a more comprehensive driving package.

Who is it for?

Those whose work involves driving in difficult or dangerous terrain, who need to be self-sufficient and able to recover vehicles from various situations.

Course content

Days 1 - 3 are spent learning the principles and skills of off-road driving and obstacle crossing.

Day 4 will be spent learning the art of vehicle recovery techniques, in particular using different types of jack.

This course will cover the following topics:


  • Learn the principles of cross-country driving
  • Understand the safety issues of driving in different weather and road conditions
  • Practice and demonstrate the ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle cross-country
  • Be able to cross a range of different obstacles safely
  • Know how to traverse steep climbs and descents safely
  • Be able to check a vehicle for serviceability
  • Carry out basic vehicle servicing and maintenance
  • Understand the different types of vehicle recovery systems
  • Be able to use an electrical winch in a safe and competent manner

  • Be able to use a manual winch in a safe and competent manner
  • Be able to use a high lift jack in a safe and competent manner
  • Be able to use a bottle jack in a safe and competent manner
  • Be able to use an air jack in a safe and competent manner
  • Be able to use a kinetic towrope safely
  • Be able to use sand channels correctly
  • Be able to fit snow chains
  • Be able to change a vehicle tyre safely
  • Know how to conduct a vehicle first parade
  • Know how to conduct a vehicle last parade
